UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis is training for his upcoming bout with Marcin Tybura in an unconventional way. Lewis has put out a public invitation for sparring partners. That means he's invited ANYONE off the street to come spar with him at his training facility, Houston Muay Thai, tomorrow Tuesday Feb. 6th at 11:00am.
In conversation with journalist Ariel Helwani on Helwani's Feb. 5th 2018 MMA Hour, Lewis confirmed the invitation: "Yeah. Come spar me. If anyone thinks something weak about (me), we'll see tomorrow."
Ariel: "Wow. Do you usually do this?"
Lewis: "No, I don't. I really haven't sparred in a long time but I just really been moving around the last couple of weeks with one of my guys. I just wanted to switch things up a little bit."
Lewis was on a 6 fight UFC win streak until he suffered a 4th round TKO loss to Mark Hunt last summer. Lewis made the announcement that he would welcome sparring partners off the street in an instagram post.
Ariel: "Do you think anyone shows up?"
Lewis: "If they don't, that's cool. If they do, that's cool. So we'll see. I'll let you know.
(The instagram post) got 30,000 views. I believe only 2 guys said they'll come tomorrow, so we'll see."
When pressed by Helwani regarding whether the open sparring invitation is in response to smack talk Lewis has been taking online Lewis responded: "(People) always talk smack, but I just want them to know how it feels to get inside the cage against a real fighter."
"So anybody out there who thinks something weak about your boy, come on down to Houston Muay Thai, 11 o'clock a.m. tomorrow, central time."
Ariel postulated if anyone shows up to face Lewis tomorrow, "that will probably be the most anticipated sparring video since Paulie Malignaggi vs. Conor McGregor."
Derrick Lewis: "Yeah, OK. It might be."
Interested in sparring Derrick Lewis? The session goes down tomorrow Tuesday February 6th at Houston Muay Thai at 1612 Austin St. Houston, Texas at 11:00 a.m.
